Overview: Gloom is a reasonably good physically defensive wall in the metagame, thanks to Strength Sap and its good defensive stats. However, it faces heavy competition from the likes of Servine, Roselia, Ferroseed and Quilladin as a defensive Grass-type, which limits its viability. Additionally, it cannot wall Sliggoo, Pawniard and Klang due to their abilities.
---------------------
Physically Defensive: Physically defensive Gloom can wall physical threats such as Alolan Grimer, Machoke, Fraxure, Krokorok and Hakamo-o. Gloom's main niche is Strength Sap, which lets it recover HP equal to the opposing Pokemon’s Attack stat, while also lowering their Attack by one stage. Sleep Powder forces switches and prevents Pokemon such as Pawniard and Klang from setting up on Gloom. Sludge Bomb is a STAB attack which does decent damage to Fairy- and Grass-types like Servine, Togetic and Tangela. Giga Drain hits Ground- and Water-types such as Prinplup, Krokorok and Croconaw. Moonblast can be used over Giga Drain to hit Dragon- and Fighting-types such as Machoke, Fraxure and Hakamo-o for super effective damage.
---------------------
Checks & Counters: Defensive Grass-types like Roselia, Ferroseed and Quilladin can easily switch into all four of Gloom’s attacks and take advantage of it by setting up Spikes. Sliggoo can also set up on Gloom easily thanks to Sap Sipper. Gloom also suffers from the fact that Strength Sap is an unreliable form of recovery as it recovers less and less the more it is used on the same Pokemon. If Pokemon on the enemy team is already asleep, Duosion, Pawniard and Klang can use Gloom as a chance to setup. Offensive special Fire-types like Monferno, Combusken and Magmar threaten Gloom out with strong Fire STAB attacks but they do not appreciate switching into Sludge Bomb. Kadabra hits Gloom very hard with Psychic. Haunter can avoid Sleep Powder with Substitute, cripple it with Will-O-Wisp and then hit it with a powered up Hex.
