---------------------
Overview: Wartortle is a good defensive check and lure for a multitude of Pokemon in the tier, such as Monferno, Sliggoo, Clefairy and Frogadier depending on its set. It also provides good hazard removal in Rapid Spin. However, a lack of reliable recovery and general passiveness makes it fairly easy to wall and exploit. Despite this, it still fulfills the niche of being a reasonably good wall with hazard removal.
---------------------
PhysDef Rapid Spin: The physically defensive set can check Metang, Lairon and Torracat well and adequately check physical Monferno. It can also tank one hit from other physical attackers such as Machoke and Fraxure and OHKO or chip them heavily with Counter. Rapid Spin removes hazards off your side of the field. However, Ghost-type Pokemon can block it. Scald acts as a weak STAB move which can threaten physical Pokemon with burns and can 2HKO frail Fire- and Ground-types such as Monferno, Combusken and Krokorok. Toxic hits switch-ins such as Servine and Quilladin. Seismic Toss gets 100 HP of chip against non-Ghost switch-ins, somewhat alleviating Wartortle's passiveness. Haze removes any boosts accumulated by bulky slow setup sweepers/cleaners such as Sliggoo and Clefairy.
---------------------
SpDef Rapid Spin: The specially defensive set can check Clefairy, Frogadier and Magmar well and adequately check special Monferno. It can also tank a hit from Roselia, Servine and Electabuzz and OHKO them with Mirror Coat.
---------------------
Checks & Counters: Wartortle is very passive and lacks reliable recovery. Pokemon such as Clefairy and Mareanie can switch into it and slowly wear it down. Grass-types such as Ferroseed, Servine, Roselia and Quilladin can wall Wartortle and scout for Counter/Mirror Coat by not clicking their super effective STAB move straight away. Any Pokemon with reasonable defenses and longevity can switch into and wall Wartortle.
