---------------------
Overview: With a good defensive Grass/Poison typing, access to Spikes and reliable recovery, specially defensive Roselia acts as a fantastic glue Pokemon and Spiker for a variety of playstyles in the metagame.
---------------------
SpDef Spikes: Specially defensive Roselia serves as a phenomenal defensive counter to bulky Grass- and Water-types such as Servine, opposing Roselia, Gloom, Prinplup, Wartortle and defensive Mareanie. It can also check other strong special attackers such as Frogadier, Haunter and Electabuzz. Giga Drain is a reasonably strong STAB attack, even when uninvested, and it hits Ground- and Water-types such as Prinplup, Krokorok, Marshtomp and Wartortle hard. Sludge Bomb hits Fairy- and Grass-types like Clefairy, Servine, Togetic and Tangela for good damage. Spikes pressure any opposing team archetype well and Roselia's fantastic typing and bulk lets it set up Spikes freely on a reasonable chunk of the metagame, while pressuring common Defog users such as Prinplup, Servine and Togetic with super effective STAB attacks. Synthesis provides Roselia with much needed longevity, allowing it to perform its defensive roles consistently throughout a match.
---------------------
Choice Specs: Offensive Roselia makes good use of its great Special Attack stat. Leaf Storm hits Ground- and Water-types such as Prinplup, Krokorok, Marshtomp and Wartortle very hard and it also hits neutral targets hard. Hidden Power Fire is a good coverage move and hits Steel-types such as Pawniard, Ferroseed and Metang, who resist Roselia's STAB attacks, hard.
---------------------
Checks & Counters: If Roselia is not carrying Hidden Power Fire, Steel-types such as Pawniard, Ferroseed, Metang and Klang are effective counters and can switch into and set up on Roselia. Certain Poison-types such as Alolan Grimer and Roselia are also good counters to Roselia. Bulky special walls such as Sliggoo, Dusclops and Vibrava wall Roselia and Vibrava can also Defog all Spikes away. Thanks to Bulletproof, Quilladin also walls Roselia. All the above Pokemon are capable of tanking Roselia's STAB attacks and most are capable of threatening or forcing it out. Roselia has poor physical defense, which makes it very vulnerable to being Pursuit trapped by Alolan Grimer, Metang and Pawniard, especially if its Eviolite has been removed. Offensively, physical Fire-types such as Monferno and Combusken can threaten Roselia out with super effective STAB attacks but do not appreciate switching into Sludge Bomb or any Choice Specs attack.
