Overview: Diglett is the tier's premier wallbreaker, thanks to its sky-high Speed (only tying with Voltorb) and its powerful Earthquake, making it one of the most essential members of any RBY LC team. Its raw power allows it to revenge kill many weakened Pokemon and very few things in the metagame are able to switch into it safely. However, Diglett itself also struggles to switch into many Pokemon due to its lackluster bulk. Once it's on the field, however, Diglett proves to be one of the most threatening Pokemon in the metagame.
---------------------
Substitute + 3 Attacks: Diglett's Earthquake is one of the most difficult things to switch into in the metagame, 2HKOing and OHKOing many of the tier's most common Pokemon. Rock Slide allows Diglett to hit Doduo and Pidgey on the switch, who could otherwise switch in safely on an Earthquake. Body Slam allows Diglett to spread paralysis and to cripple switchins, but Slash can be used instead due to its higher power. Finally, Diglett's offensive pressure forces many switches, giving it ample opportunity to set up a Substitute and to get one hit off on a Pokemon that could otherwise OHKO it, such as Staryu.
---------------------
Checks and Counters: Paralysis is by far the best counter to Diglett, as a paralyzed Diglett is left open to being OHKOed by many slower Pokemon that it would otherwise beat handily; a notable example is Exeggcute, who can switch in freely into any move and threaten Diglett with Stun Spore. Water-types such as Poliwag, Staryu, Slowpoke and Shellder can easily threaten Diglett out. None of these Pokemon appreciate switching directly in, however, aside from Slowpoke who is only 3HKOed by Earthquake and can threaten Diglett out with Surf. Pokemon with Quick Attack, namely Pikachu, Rattata and Pidgey are able to pick off Diglett; Pidgey in particular can switch in freely on an Earthquake and can usually 2HKO Diglett with Double-Edge + Quick Attack, though it must be wary of Rock Slide.
