Overview: Pidgeotto cements itself as an extremely potent physical wallbreaker due to its decent speed tier, strong STAB, and Attack stat. Coupled with moves that allow it to check Pokémon that would otherwise be counters, such as Rhyhorn, Nosepass, and Magnemite, make it all the more valuable as a wallbreaker. Pidgeotto is able to set itself apart from Taillow thanks to higher base Attack and its better bulk, the latter of which enables it have a significant chance to survive Double-Edge from non-Choice Band Aipom and Castform and Aerial Ace from Band Delibird.
---------------------
Choice Band: Double-Edge is Pidgeotto's strongest STAB which deals massive damage to any non-resist. Return can be used instead in order to preserve Pidgeotto's HP. Quick Attack allows Pidgeotto to more effectively be a revenge killer and kill faster threats with enough chip such as Elekid and Taillow. Aerial Ace is secondary STAB that allows Pidgeotto to hit Pokemon such as Bayleef, Dustox, and Sunflora, whereas Hidden Power [Fighting] is used to hit Pokemon such as Aipom, Magnemite, Aron, and Castform. If opting for Hidden Power [Flying] for its higher base power over Aerial Ace, Steel Wing should be run in the last slot, as it 2HKO's most Rhyhorn sets and provides Pidgeotto with super effective coverage against Lileep.

Checks and Counters: Normal resists such as Rhyhorn, Lileep, Magnemite, Nosepass, and Larvitar can all threaten Pidgeotto if it is locked into the wrong move. Likewise, Koffing can tank any hit that isn’t Double-Edge or Return and threaten Pidgeotto back with a Will-O-Wisp or Sludge Bomb. Lilleep is also worth noting thanks to its access to Recover and heal up damage lost from weaker attacks. Rhyhorn, Magnemite, and Larvitar can all take advantage of the fact that Pidgeotto is choice-locked by using Substitute or boosting moves. Faster Pokémon such as Taillow, Aipom, and Elekid threaten Pidgeotto immensely with their attacks.
