Overview: With a fantastic defensive typing and access to STAB Knock Off, Alolan Grimer is a very good utility Pokemon in the tier. It hits hard, spams its STAB attacks and spreads Poison. It also carves itself the valuable niche of being the premier Haunter and Kadabra check and Pursuit trapper in the tier, while also having enough bulk to tank hits from other special attackers when invested.
---------------------
Offensive Trapper: The offensive trapper set gives up some special bulk in exchange for more Attack. Poison Jab / Gunk Shot are strong Poison STAB attacks, hitting Fairy- and Grass-types such as Clefairy, Roselia, Servine and Togetic very hard. In conjunction with Poison Touch, these moves have a 51% chance to inflict Poison on opposing walls, helping Alolan Grimer accumulate chip on bulkier Pokemon. STAB Knock Off is very spammable, removing Eviolites or other items from switch-ins. Pursuit lets Alolan Grimer trap Haunter and Kadabra but also lets it get valuable chip on frail special attackers such as Electabuzz and Frogadier. Clear Smog ensures any non-Steel type cannot set up on a weakened Alolan Grimer and lets it avoid Counter from Kadabra, while Shadow Sneak acts as useful priority which works well in conjunction with Poison Touch.
---------------------
SpDef Trapper: Specially defensive Alolan Grimer is weaker but acts as a much better check to special attackers such as Electabuzz, Frogadier, Roselia, Servine and Misdreavus.
---------------------
Checks & Counters: Mareanie and Gloom wall Alolan Grimer. Even though they do not like having their Eviolites removed, they can easily come in on Alolan Grimer multiple times during the game and wall it. Steel-types such as Ferroseed, Klang and Lairon can also switch into it multiple times, although Ferroseed and Klang do have to fear Fire Blast/Fire Punch. Ground-types such as Krokorok and Gabite can also switch into Alolan Grimer and threaten it out with Earthquake. It is also very slow so strong Pokemon in the tier such as Monferno, Machoke and Fraxure can revenge kill it after it has been chipped or weakened. Alolan Grimer lacks reliable recovery so it is susceptible to chip from hazards or from checking special attackers.
