Overview: Sporting one of the highest Defense stats in NFE and a great ability in Regenerator, Tangela acts as solid defensive pivot, capable of switching into and checking prominent physical attackers. However, it faces heavy competition as a physically defensive Grass-type from Pokemon such as Gloom and Quilladin.
-------------------
PhysDef Pivot: This Tangela set can check physical attackers such as Machoke, Fraxure, Metang and Croconaw. It can even tank unboosted super effective physical attacks from the likes of Monferno, Combusken and Staravia. Giga Drain is a good STAB attack, which allows Tangela to deal good damage to Ground- and Water-types such as Prinplup, Krokorok, Marshtomp and Wartortle and recover some of its health. Sleep Powder allows Tangela to cripple opposing Pokemon and punish switch-ins. Hidden Power Fire lets Tangela hit Ferroseed hard and chips other Steel-types such as Metang and Pawniard. Leech Seed provides Tangela with recovery while also wearing down switch-ins. Synthesis gives Tangela a more reliable form of recovery though this comes at the cost of being able to consistently wear down opponents. Knock Off lets Tangela cripple walls by removing their Eviolite.
-------------------
Checks & Counters: Bulky Grass-types such as Roselia, Servine, Quilladin and Gloom can easily switch into any of Tangela's attacks and threaten it back or, in the case of Roselia and Quilladin, use it as an opportunity to set Spikes. However, none of the aforementioned Pokemon appreciate losing their Eviolite. Strong special attackers including Frogadier and Haunter are able to heavily pressure Tangela due to its poor Special Defense. Special Fire-types such as Monferno, Combusken, and Magmar threaten to OHKO Tangela with their STAB moves. However, none of the above Pokemon appreciate switching into Tangela. Toxic also severely limits Tangela's longevity and defensive capabilities.
