---------------------
Overview: Marshtomp is a reasonably good Stealth Rock setter and attacker in the tier. It has a fantastic defensive typing, good bulk, and good offensive STAB attacks.
---------------------
PhysDef Rocks: This physically defensive Marshtomp set can tank hits better from the likes of physical Monferno, Alolan Grimer, Machoke, physical Combusken, and Steel-types excluding Ferroseed. Waterfall acts as a reasonably strong STAB attack, which hits Fire- and Ground-types such as Monferno, Combusken, and Krokorok for super effective damage. Earthquake hits Poison- and Steel-types such as Alolan Grimer, Mareanie, Metang, Pawniard, and Klang for good damage. Ice Punch can hit common Marshtomp switch-ins such as Roselia, Servine, Gloom, and Quilladin for good damage and force them to recover. It also hits Dragon-types such as Sliggoo, Fraxure, Gabite, and Vibrava for good damage. Yawn punishes switch-ins and forces the opponent to either let their Grass-type switch-in fall asleep or switch out again, which accumulates hazard damage and lets you take advantage of the switch. It also deters setting up on Marshtomp.
---------------------
SpDef Rocks: This specially defensive set can tank a hit or two better from the likes of Clefairy, Frogadier, Kadabra, and Magmar.
---------------------
Curse: Curse Marshtomp acts as a good late-game wincon once the Grass-types have been dealt with. With only one weakness in Grass-type attacks, Marshtomp can be surprisingly difficult to stop once it gets a few Curse boosts. Curse boosts Marshtomp's Attack and Defense and Rest gives it longevity.
---------------------
Checks and Counters: Bulky Grass-types such as Servine, Gloom, Ferroseed, and Quilladin can easily switch into uninvested Ice Punch and threaten Marshtomp out or recover. They all dislike Yawn though. Physically bulky Water-types such as Prinplup and Wartortle can also switch into Stealth Rock or an attack and either remove the hazards or threaten Marshtomp with a Scald burn or Toxic. Bulky walls such as Clefairy and Staravia can also easily switch into the hazard set and wear Marshtomp down, since it lacks reliable recovery. Offensively, Roselia, Hidden Power Grass Electabuzz, and Misdreavus can revenge kill or cripple Marshtomp, although none appreciate switching into it.
