Overview: With good bulk and fantastic utility options, Prinplup is one of the best role compressors in the tier. It acts as a bulky wall, which can also set up Stealth Rock and Defog hazards away. However, Prinplup can be easily overwhelmed and pressured due to its lack of reliable recovery.
---------------------
PhysDef Rocker + Defog: This physically defensive Prinplup set can tank hits and check prominent threats in the metagame such as physical Monferno, physical Combusken, Krokorok, Marshtomp, and Metang. Scald hits Fire- and Ground-types like Monferno, Combusken, and Krokorok for reasonable damage and can burn and cripple other physical threats. Defog removes hazards from both sides of the field, and Prinplup’s bulk and defensive typing lets it switch into Stealth Rock users such as Clefairy, Marshtomp, and Gabite. Ice Beam acts as a way to chip Grass-types like Roselia, Servine, and Gloom on the switch but also hits frailer Dragon-types like Fraxure, Gabite, and Vibrava for good damage. Toxic lets Prinplup cripple and wear down bulky walls such as Servine, Quilladin, and Togetic on the switch-in.
---------------------
SpDef Rocker + Defog: This specially defensive set lets Prinplup check prominent special attackers in the tier such as Frogadier, Kadabra, special Monferno, special Combusken, and Magmar.
---------------------
Checks and Counters: Bulky Grass-type Pokemon, such as Roselia, Servine, Ferroseed, Quilladin, and Gloom, are the biggest counters to Prinplup; they easily switch into it and either threaten it out or set up hazards on it. However, Servine and Quilladin do not appreciate being worn down by poison or burn. Mareanie can also switch into Prinplup and either set up Toxic Spikes or Knock Off its Eviolite. Due to Prinplup’s passive nature, bulky setup sweepers like Clefairy, Curse Sliggoo, and Duosion easily set up on it. Electabuzz and Eelektrik also threaten Prinplup with their super effective STAB attacks. Opposing Toxic users, such as Wartortle, are also a threat as they wear down non-Rest Prinplup. Taunt users, like Frogadier and Quilladin, are a good way of shutting down Prinplup, as they prevent it from using its utility moves. Prinplup is also very susceptible to chip from hazards.
