---------------------
Overview: Lampent's solid offensive typing, good Special Attack, and useful resistances let it act as a reasonably good wallbreaker or Choice Scarf/Choice Specs user. In addition, its typing allows it to set up on or exploit free turns from key threats such as Roselia, Monferno, and Combusken. However, a susceptibility to hazards, low speed, and weakness to Pursuit trapping leaves it second class to other special Fire-type wallbreakers such as Monferno, Combusken, and Magmar.
---------------------
Choice Scarf / Choice Specs: Fire Blast hits Grass- and Steel-types such as Roselia, Servine, Metang, and Ferroseed for super effective damage and it also hits most neutral targets hard. Shadow Ball provides fantastic neutral coverage against most of the tier, primarily the Dragon-types who resist Fire Blast, and it also hits Ghost- and Psychic-types such as Misdreavus, Metang, Duosion, and Dusclops hard. Energy Ball hits Ground- and Water-types such as Krokorok, Marshtomp, Prinplup, and Wartortle for reasonable damage. Flamethrower provides a 100% accurate Fire-type STAB attack for scenarios where risking a Fire Blast miss is not necessary. Trick lets Lampent cripple Eviolite reliant switch-ins such as Alolan Grimer, Mareanie, and Marshtomp. The Choice Scarf set gives up power in order to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame, including notable threats such as Electabuzz, Kadabra, Haunter, Frogadier, and Misdreavus. The Choice Specs set gives up speed for much more power and wallbreaking potential.
---------------------
Offensive Sub CM: The offensive Calm Mind set makes use of Lampent's defensive niches in order to act as a wallbreaker. Thanks to Flash Fire and its Ghost typing, Lampent walls most Monferno and Combusken sets barring the rare Electrium Z Thunder Punch sets. Therefore, it can easily set up either Calm Mind or Substitute on Monferno and Combusken, as well as two other common defensive Pokemon in Clefairy and Roselia. Lampent's Inferno Overdrive hits neutral targets such as Alolan Grimer very hard after a boost or two.
---------------------
Checks and Counters: Specially defensive Mareanie can pivot around the Choice Scarf and Choice Specs sets and also Haze boosts away from the Calm Mind set. Alolan Grimer can tank any hit and either Pursuit trap Lampent or threaten it with Knock Off. Choice Scarf Krokorok and Pawniard cannot switch into Lampent but can easily Pursuit trap or threaten it on a free switch. Bulky Dragon- and Water-types such as Gabite, Prinplup, Wartortle, and Vibrava can tank a hit from and threaten Lampent but none of them appreciate switching into Trick. Lampent is also slow and all sets can be revenge killed by fast Choice Scarf users such as Frogadier, Haunter, and Krokorok. Non-Choice Scarf sets can be revenge killed by faster attackers such as Haunter, Misdreavus, Fraxure, Staravia, and Gabite.
