Overview: Thanks to its high Speed stat, Taunt, and access to both Light Screen and Reflect, Voltorb is the premier dual screens setter in the metagame and a staple for screens-based hyper offensive teams in the tier. However, Voltorb is outclassed in every other aspect by Electabuzz, who boasts higher offensive stats and a wide movepool. As a dual screens setter, Voltorb’s main niche over Electabuzz is Taunt.
---------------------
Dual Screens: Voltorb’s main objective is to be a lead, set up screens which provide support for the setup sweepers, and then explode for the damage and in order to not waste turns. This helps setup sweepers like Fraxure, Hakamo-o, Klang, Croconaw, and Eevee have an easier time setting up on more Pokemon in the tier. Taunt stops the opponent from stacking hazards turn 1 and stops Defog from removing screens. It also ensures that opposing offensive setup sweepers like Fraxure, Klang, and Croconaw cannot exploit Voltorb by setting up on it. Explosion provides momentum, weakens Pokemon for the set up sweepers, and ensures screen turns are not wasted.
----------------------
Checks and Counters: Faster offensive Pokemon like Choice Scarf Frogadier and Kadabra can prevent Voltorb from setting dual screens reliably. Offensive hazard setters and setup sweepers more or less force a 50/50 with whether or not Voltorb needs to click Taunt or not to prevent hazards or setup, and Voltorb can get KOed without setting up screens if it predicts wrong. While Knock Off doesn't prevent Voltorb from setting up screens, it does reduce the duration of Reflect and Light Screen to only five turns. This makes it harder for Voltorb and its teammates to capitalize on the defensive utility provided. Servine also completely shuts Voltorb down because it can boost its Special Attack while attacking, which means Light Screen becomes far less useful against a boosted Servine.
