Overview:
Torterra is one of the defensive pillars of non-stall strategies in ZU, carrying a very good defensive typing, recovery in Synthesis, hazard setting in Stealth Rock, and powerful STAB moves in Earthquake and Wood Hammer. Torterra's ability to take on Lycanroc, ZU's most threatening setup sweeper, while maintaining offensive presence and the ability to keep itself healthy via Synthesis is invaluable to any balance strategy. On the offensive side Torterra has access to both Rock Polish and Swords Dance, which give it the ability to threaten a large portion of the metagame. Moreover, Torterra's setup options, in tandem with its great moves in Earthquake and Wood Hammer, help it break through the very few Pokemon who can check it. While Torterra may enjoy these many upsides, it also does suffer in some ways. Ice-type moves are terrifying to Torterra, and with every Silvally form able to use them, Torterra suffers in hazard wars. Fire-type attacks are also fairly common, especially from Monferno and Combusken. Also, offensive Flying-type Pokemon such as Oricorio-Baille and Rotom-S are able to be incredibly threatening to Torterra. The occasional offensive Bug type can also trouble Torterra, which lacks a method to reliably hurt Bug-types on most sets.
Notes:
Physically Defensive - Physically Defensive Torterra counters Lycanroc as well as many Ground and/or Rock types such as Golem and Probopass and offers a reliable physical wall with hazard setting and decent enoguh power even uninvested that it is difficult for Rotom-Frost to consider coming in in fear of a Wood Hammer taking out a large chunk of its health as well as forcing mind games because of its Electric immunity. Leftovers and Occa Berry can both excel for this set.
Rock Polish - Rock Polish Torterra is able to set up a Rock Polish to outspeed everything up to Choice Scarf Chatot and wreak havoc with its great STAB options and access to Swords Dance to help it break through defensive Pokemon. It is very important to note that an unboosted Bloom Doom on Wood Hammer will OHKO Rotom-Frost, meaning that as soon as Torterra successfully sets up Rock Polish a Rotom-Frost is no longer able to take on Torterra. Stone Edge can be used on this set instead, but is subpar in the current meta and should be reserved only for non-Z Rock Polish sets.
